Listen to Your Muscles – They Might Be Trying to Tell You Something
Let’s be honest, most of us are running on empty more often than we’d like to admit. Whether it’s long hours at work, juggling family life, or just dealing with the day-to-day grind, it’s easy to ignore the signs your body is giving you. But here’s the thing: your body’s not being dramatic when it’s aching or stiff. It’s trying to tell you something and that something might be, “Please book me a massage!”
As a professional spa therapist, I’ve seen it all from hunched shoulders that haven’t relaxed in months to clients who didn’t realise how tense they were until they finally lay on the treatment table. So how do you know if your body is crying out for a massage? Let’s explore the signs, the benefits, and even the times when massage isn’t the best idea.
If getting out of bed in the morning feels like you’ve just run a marathon or if your shoulders feel permanently glued to your ears it’s time to listen up. Muscle tightness is one of the first and most obvious signs that you could benefit from a proper massage.
I once had a client who came in complaining of daily neck pain. She thought it was just from “sleeping funny,” but after two sessions, she realised she’d been holding stress in her upper back for months without knowing.
Tension headaches are more common than you’d think. If you often feel a band of pressure across your forehead or behind your eyes, it could be muscular tension radiating from your shoulders, neck, or even your jaw.
Massage can help loosen those tight areas, improve circulation, and relieve that pressure. You might be surprised how quickly your headaches ease once your muscles start to relax.
When your body is in a constant state of tension or stress, it uses up energy even when you’re sitting still. That “wired but tired” feeling is a big clue that your nervous system needs a reset. Massage encourages your body to switch from fight-or-flight mode into rest-and-digest, allowing you to actually relax and recharge.
You don’t have to be an athlete or recovering from an injury to benefit from a full body massage. In fact, some of the people who gain the most from it are those with demanding office jobs, busy parents, or anyone dealing with chronic stress.
One of my clients, a secondary school teacher, told me her monthly massage sessions were the only time she could truly switch off and after a term of dealing with teens, who could blame her?
If you’ve tried a relaxing massage before but felt like it didn’t quite “hit the spot,” you may need something more targeted like a deep tissue massage. This technique works into the deeper layers of muscle, helping to release stubborn knots and break down tension patterns that have built up over time.
It’s worth noting that deep tissue doesn’t mean pain. A skilled therapist can work deeply without making you wince and they’ll always adjust to your comfort level.
This one varies depending on your lifestyle and what you’re hoping to achieve. Think of massage like exercise or brushing your teeth—it’s most effective when done regularly.
And yes this includes “just because” massages too. You don’t have to be broken to benefit. In fact, staying on top of your tension prevents bigger issues down the line.
While massage is generally safe for most people, there are a few situations when it’s best to wait or speak to your therapist first.
A good therapist will always do a consultation and adjust the treatment if needed or refer you to your GP if they think it’s not appropriate.
Yes, massage melts away knots and eases tension but the benefits of massage go much deeper than that.
One of the most common things I hear after a session is: “I didn’t realise how much I needed that.” Your body often knows before your brain does.
And if you’re unsure where to start, a Swedish massage is a great introduction it’s gentle, relaxing, and improves circulation while still giving your muscles the attention they need.
Your body speaks to you through tension, fatigue, pain and restlessness. The more you tune in and take action whether that’s stretching, resting, or booking a massage the better you’ll feel, both physically and mentally.
At Dragonfly Skin Day Spa in Leeds, our professional massage therapists are here to help you reset, recharge, and feel like yourself again. Massage isn’t just for pamper days—it’s a form of essential self-care and long-term wellbeing.

I just enjoyed a session in the floatation tank and 1.5hr pregnancy massage. I have lots of experience with both - and this was by far the best once in terms of service, welcome, and massage pressure/comfort. Highly recommended - can’t wait to book in again.Posted on Rob JonesTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. One of the best massages I’ve ever had! Tetiana gave me such a relaxing time. The staff and the place were really nice too. However, my spine starting hurting afterwards, I don’t know if it’s normal. One day later, I still hope the pain quickly goes away 😅Posted on Agata OskrobaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Great massage!
